Frequently asked questions

What is the five number summary?
The minimum, first quartile (Q1), median, third quartile (Q3) and maximum of a data set. Together they describe center and spread, and they are exactly the five values a box plot draws.
How do I find Q1 and Q3 by hand?
Sort the data and find the median. Q1 is the median of the lower half and Q3 the median of the upper half, excluding the overall median itself when the count is odd. That is the TI-84 (Moore) method this calculator uses.
Why does my answer differ from another calculator?
There are several quartile conventions. Excel’s QUARTILE.INC interpolates positions, while TI-84 and most US statistics courses use the median-of-halves method. Both are legitimate; use the one your course teaches.
What is the IQR and what is it for?
The interquartile range = Q3 − Q1, the spread of the middle 50% of the data. It resists outliers, and the 1.5×IQR rule uses it to flag them, see the outlier calculator.

Quartile method: medians of the lower/upper halves excluding the overall median when n is odd (Moore method, matches TI-84 and most US statistics courses). Excel’s QUARTILE.INC may differ.
